Bullying and the AMA

they should come right out and state that bullying is a driver of burn out. They haven’t done that.

400 physicians a year are committing suicide. And all we have is a program for organizations with more than 100 physicians, and a promise from organizations with less than 100 providers. Not a promise to the smaller organizations, but a promise from the small organizations. None of this is very well-defined, and I’m not sure where they’re going with us. More importantly, I’m not sure the AMA knows where they’re going with this. We need answers today.

What Can You Do To Battle Burnout in Your Organization?

As you know, burnout is at an all-time high. I wanted to ask you, what are you doing to help your colleagues and coworkers address this issue? Are you even aware of what you, specifically, can do for them? Do you feel as if there’s nothing that you as an individual can do?

Are You Listening?

I was speaking with a CMO recently, and asked him what we need to do to improve how physicians communicate to administrators. He said the onus is not on the providers, but on Administration.

What are you Transforming?

Recently, I was reminded of the story of the carrot, the egg and the coffee bean. Perhaps you’ve heard it. A grandmother is in the kitchen, and she has three pots of water on the stove. Her granddaughter asks what she is doing.

We need experts who have the knowledge and flexibility to come up with solutions that work for all parties. Someone who can look at the big picture, pull together the entire healthcare community and take definitive action. It must be action that makes sense, uses up to date technology, and is fair for all parties.

How does it work? We teach people to speak to one another’s values. You’ve heard of listening to answer vs listening to understand? Well, we take that one step further. We teach first to use personality science to find the values of everyone around you, then listen to, and speak to their values.

Recognition, Rewards & Burnout

I’ve had a CEO tell me that if people are leaving their jobs, it’s almost never about money. That got me thinking. As an Executive #Coach who works in #healthcare and deals with burnout, I went back to the basics of #burnout and how that applies to healthcare. I went back to #Maslach’s 6 factors of burnout. Her fourth factor is a lack of #rewards and #recognition. This makes total sense to me. If people don’t feel recognized, and appreciated for the work they’re doing, they’ll seek a workplace where they are appreciated.

How Are You Speaking to Your People?

How you speak to your staff, your colleagues, your team, can make or break them. Newsflash people! We are not here to break anybody. We are here to serve our patients.

There Are No Dysfunctional Physicians

They are told they are a horrible person. They get low satisfaction scores. They are told they are in the wrong profession. These are predictable responses from someone who doesn’t understand the personality science behind this. To make matters worse, it is often handled with poor emotional intelligence.

How to Build Trust in Your Organization

People who can’t trust their employer won’t stick around. People who can’t leave will no longer be effective, productive employees. This creates at the least unhappiness, and at the worst an unsafe workplace or a toxic work environment or both. So, I ask you, is this the structure you want to be building in your organization? Or would you like to learn about alternatives?
